Advocacy

Amicus Activity. The NCADA, through the participation of its members, has established a significant presence in North Carolina courts through amicus brief filings. Association leadership is selective of the cases in which amicus briefs are filed and seeks authors to present the best legal positions without influence or bias.

N.C. Defense Fund. The N.C. Defense Fund is the political action committee of the NCADA. The Defense Fund is designed to permit the messages of the defense bar, particularly those concerning evenhandedness, to be transmitted to the public in tangible ways allowing the members of the NCADA to participate in the political process to better serve the interests of civil justice in the State.

Judicial Candidates’ Forum. The Forum is held for all candidates seeking elected judicial positions at the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court. Candidates are asked to address a question of interest to members and their clients. The Judicial Candidates Forum is held in conjunction with the annual Fall Seminar and is held during election years.

Legislative Activity. The NCADA works with a lobbyist to monitor activities of interest at the General Assembly. Regular updates are provided when the General Assembly is in session, and members are alerted when potential legislation of interest may need action.

Professional Development

Continuing Legal Education. The NCADA offers exceptional CLE offerings annually that are geared to the practice and educational needs of the civil defense practitioner. Regular programming includes the Annual Meeting, Fall Seminar, offerings from practice groups, young lawyers and other program offerings of interest.

The Defender. The Association’s publication, The Defender, is produced and mailed approximately every three months to Association members, the state’s judiciary, and insurance professionals. This newsletter highlights current topics of interest in the defense practice, member news, Association activities and opportunities available in the NCADA and the Defense Research Institute.

Practice Groups. The NCADA has 8 practice groups in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Construction Law, Employment, General Liability, Government Liability, Medical Malpractice, Product Liability, Workers' Compensation and Young Lawyers. These groups are responsible, within the area of law and practice indicated by its name, for monitoring developments, seeking ways and means of improving law or procedure, and cooperating with the continuing legal education programs of the Association, and other appropriate projects and groups in furthering the knowledge and skills of the defense bar in that area of practice and in furthering the interests of the Association as a whole.

Young Lawyers Committee. NCADA members who have practiced for six years or less in civil defense and/or are 36 years of age or younger are automatically members of the Young Lawyers Committee. The Young Lawyers Committee is responsible for an annual seminar or program geared to meet the needs of the younger defense practitioner.

Networking

Annual Meeting. The NCADA Annual Meeting is an opportunity for members to obtain one half of their annual CLE requirements and enjoy a fun, relaxing weekend. Current topics of interest to the defense bar are presented in two half day segments. During the Annual Meeting, a General Business Meeting is held where Association Officers and Directors are confirmed.

Fall Seminar. The NCADA annually hosts a seminar that addresses topics of interest for the defense bar and insurance claims professionals. This day long seminar provides continuing education credits for both the defense attorney and the insurance claims professional. This meeting also provides an opportunity for members to network and socialize with other members and clients.

www.ncada.org. Through our website, we try to keep our members updated on things going on in the Association and provide links to other organizations and resources in an easy to navigate, low graphic format. Other resources include practice group pages, online CLE, discussion boards and many practice resource links.

DRI. The NCADA enjoys a close relationship with the Defense Research Institute, the national defense organization. Members are encouraged to utilize the many practice resources available with DRI.
