OFFICERS & BOARD OF DIRECTORS INDUCTED AT 30TH ANNUAL
MEETING
The North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys held its 30th Annual
Meeting at the Westin Resort, Hilton Head, South Carolina during the weekend of
May 31-June 3, 2007. Officers and board of directors for the 2007-2008 year took
office at the close of the Annual Meeting on June 3, 2007.
Kenneth Kyre, Jr. has been inducted as the 30th president of the
Association for the 2007-2008 year. Kyre is a partner in the Greensboro law firm
of Pinto Coates Kyre & Brown, PLLC. Kyre’s practice areas include product
liability, commercial and construction litigation. A significant amount of his
cases currently involve litigation arising from alleged negligence of companies
and their employees. He practices in both state and federal courts in North
Carolina.
Leslie C. O’Toole is immediate past president having served during the
2006-2007 year. O’Toole is a partner in the Cary law firm of Ellis & Winters,
LLP. O’Toole practices in the areas of civil litigation, including products
liability (including drugs and medical devices), medical malpractice, and
commercial litigation. Officers and directors elected at the 2007 NCADA Annual
Meeting include:
Brian O.
Beverly is president-elect. Beverly is a partner with Young Moore &
Henderson, P.A. in Raleigh. His practice areas include transportation liability,
premises liability, complex insurance coverage analysis, nursing home and
medical negligence litigation.
David N. Allen has been elected executive vice president. Allen is a
partner in the Charlotte office of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein, LLP. He
represents clients including insurance companies, physicians and hospitals,
manufacturing companies and chemical companies.
Bonnie
Refinski-Knight will serve a second term as treasurer. Refinski-Knight
is a partner with Harris Creech Ward & Blackerby, P.A. in New Bern. Refinski-Knight’s
practice concentration is in the defense of liability claims against physicians,
nurses and hospitals.
Christopher G. Smith has been elected secretary. Smith is a partner with
the Raleigh law firm of Smith Anderson Blount Mitchell Dorsett & Jernigan, LLP.
Smith has significant experience in business disputes, trade secrets,
environmental and toxic tort litigation, pharmaceutical development litigation,
products liability litigation, preliminary injunctions and temporary restraining
orders, and with matters designated exceptional and complex, and assigned to the
North Carolina Business Court.
Donna R. Rutala has been elected to complete a one-year director term
expiring in 2008. Rutala is a partner in the Raleigh law firm of Patterson
Dilthey Clay & Bryson, LLP whose practice is concentrated primarily in medical
malpractice, product liability and personal injury defense litigation. Elected
to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors are:

Bomar is a partner with Wilson & Coffey, LLP in Winston-Salem. Bomar has
litigated a wide range of disputes including commercial, contract, construction,
corporate, employment, personal injury, medical malpractice, product liability,
and tax matters.
Edward F. Hennessey, IV is a shareholder with the Charlotte law firm of
Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A. Hennessey's litigation practice includes the
representation of claimants and defendants in construction, corporate and other
business-related litigation.
Erica B. Lewis is a partner with Hedrick Eatman Gardner & Kincheloe, LLP
practicing in the firm’s Wilmington office. Her practice concentration includes
Appellate Advocacy, Arson and Fraud, Civil Litigation, Construction Litigation,
and Workers' Compensation defense.
William P. Pollock practices in the Raleigh office of Cranfill Sumner &
Hartzog, LLP. He concentrates his practice in construction law, environmental
and toxic torts, products liability matters, and other complex litigation.
S. Mujeeb Shah-Khan is an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Charlotte.
He concentrates his practice in Municipal Law, Administrative Law, Tort Defense,
and government-related litigation. Currently serving terms on the NCADA’s
