Lawyer Well-Being: Managing Burnout and Transforming Stress and Pefectionism into Strengths
Lawyers are trained to push hard, think critically under stress, and deliver results. But the same qualities that fuel professional success can also lead to burnout and mental health struggles. This program takes a fresh look at lawyer well-being and offers a different way to look at concepts like perfectionism and stress. This CLE will examine the current state of mental health and burnout in the legal profession. From there, we will define burnout, explore how it develops, and consider ways to prevent it before it takes hold. Rather than viewing stress and perfectionism only as problems, participants will learn how to distinguish between harmful patterns and healthy ones. We will discuss the difference between maladaptive perfectionism and adaptive perfectionism. We will look at ways in which we can use stress to our advantage. The program will also highlight how serving others can improve the well-being of the giver when performed with the right motives and with healthy boundaries. We will conclude with a discussion of the importance of relational connection, meaning, and psychological richness.
